things I never told you.
some poems feel like water.
this one is more like sand,
and I'm suffocating in the maw
of a desert that was better left
rusting its clairvoyance.
it started one night when I remembered
that I've kept everything you've ever given me:
roses, faces, promises.
I never really understood
how to let things go,
and when the thought of
turning the things you'd touched
away from my doorstep
choked the poetry from my throat,
I realized why.
I keep reminding myself that
I should probably be nicer to you,
but I think you already know
that I'm only capable of being nice
when I'm cornered and out of ideas.

"Being pretty won't save you,"
she says as if she knows exactly
what I'm thinking
As I look into her ebony eyes
deeper than the universe, her face
dotted with freckles like stars in the night sky,
the lines on her wrists counting days where
it was just that hard to hold on,
she opens her mouth once more and repeats,
"Being pretty won't save you
and neither will being smart or being
talented or being rich of having a
better personality or a better dream."
"Why?"
"Because with each imperfection you
erase, another one will come into
clearer view until you've erased them all
and suddenly you'll look at yourself
and wonder who it is that's

I taste rain on your lips
and I know you’ve been
writing poetry again.
I breathe into the touch
of your fingers
cascading in a soft scale
down the cage of bones
around my heartbeat.
you kiss me
knowing
the colors that drift
in my mind
like water beneath
all the bridges that were
burned for me
and you stay.

Sweetie, if you ever write any sort of imaginary about ocean or pirates you know I am sold beyond the price-tag.
And it's not so much even that in this piece, because there's more and more and more - and truly, what is there not to love about this fine piece of salt and grainy sand that has taken the form of a poem?
It's the feeling that it delivers by the images, the feeling of true storm and freedom seeking souls that crash and burn and after the storm passes and the sun glares down only the windup is left and the wreckage strewn about the beach is your to collect, reform for a raft that will become a ship as you sail away to the horizon.
